The choice in five lines

  • AccessMilford Sound is the only one of Fiordland's 14 fiords you can reach by road, while Doubtful Sound has no direct road.1,2
  • SizeMilford Sound is approximately 16 km long and Doubtful Sound spans 40 km.3,4
  • CharacterVisit Fiordland says Milford provides scenic drama and Doubtful provides mystery and intrigue.5
  • Day trips from QueenstownOur Milford listing runs 12 hours from $156, and a Doubtful listing runs 13 hours from $282.
  • BothBoth fiords offer day trips, overnight cruising and kayaking.6

Two fiords, two characters

The first difference is how you arrive. Visit Fiordland says that of Fiordland National Park's 14 fiords Milford Sound is the only one accessible by road, while the Department of Conservation says Doubtful Sound has no direct road access and is quieter and more remote than Milford.1,2 Every other difference follows from that. A road brings coaches, buses, a terminal and a small settlement, and a lake and a mountain pass bring a smaller crowd.

Visit Fiordland puts the character of each in a sentence: Milford Sound will provide scenic drama, and Doubtful Sound will provide mystery and intrigue.5 RealNZ says much the same, calling Milford ideal for first-time visitors and anyone short on time, and Doubtful better for travellers seeking peace and remoteness.7 Those are views from two sources that sell tours on both fiords, so treat them as a fair summary rather than a verdict.

Neither one is a mistake. The question is the Doubtful Sound vs Milford Sound cruise you want to have: a tall-cliff show with waterfalls and a short drive from Te Anau, or a wide, quiet sound reached by lake and pass. Both belong to the same national park, which was declared a World Heritage Area in 1986.8

Size and depth: the numbers that differ

Doubtful Sound is the bigger fiord by a wide margin. Visit Fiordland says it spans 40 kilometres from the head of the fiord to the Tasman Sea, and Southern Discoveries says Milford Sound is approximately 16 kilometres long.4,3 RealNZ goes further and says Doubtful Sound is the second largest fiord in the park and three times longer than Milford Sound.9 A longer fiord means a longer cruise and more room between the walls.

Depth is closer. Visit Fiordland gives Doubtful Sound a depth of 421 m and Southern Discoveries says Milford Sound is up to 400 metres deep.10,3 The Department of Conservation says the fiords in Fiordland reach a water depth of up to 440 m.11 The sources do not measure the same way, so read these as the same order of magnitude, not as a contest.

Doubtful Sound also has more branches. It splits into three arms, which gives overnight moorings and quiet coves, and the Department of Conservation says it holds three of Fiordland's 10 marine reserves.12,13 Milford Sound is a single narrow channel from the Tasman Sea to the head of the fiord, and its famous peaks and falls stand close to the boat.

How deep

Depth of the two fiords, and the deepest in the park

  • Milford Sound400 metres
  • Doubtful Sound421 m
  • Deepest in the park440 m

Each source measures its own way: Southern Discoveries gives Milford, Visit Fiordland gives Doubtful, and the Department of Conservation gives the limit for Fiordland's fiords.3,10,11

Getting there: a road or a lake and a pass

For Milford Sound the road is the journey. Visit Fiordland says the drive from Te Anau is 120 km, and RealNZ gives 288 km from Queenstown.17,18 Southern Discoveries says the drive from Queenstown takes approximately 5 hours.19 A coach and cruise day covers it all in one go, which is why our listing runs 12 hours.

For Doubtful Sound the journey is three legs. A boat crosses Lake Manapouri, a coach climbs the Wilmot Pass, and then the cruise begins, and Visit Fiordland says to allow 2.5 hours to drive from Queenstown to Manapouri first.20,21 The Queenstown listing runs 13 hours with 2.33 hours by bus out and 2.25 hours back. From Manapouri itself the listing is 7 hours.

So a day from Queenstown costs about the same time either way, and the gap is in the money and the type of travel. Milford is mostly a coach with a cruise, and Doubtful is a coach, a lake boat, a second coach and a cruise. If you hate changing vehicles, that decides it. If you like the sense of arriving somewhere hard to reach, that decides it the other way.

Crowds, activities and wildlife

Crowds follow access. RealNZ says Milford Sound is a global attraction that can be busy in peak seasons, and that Doubtful Sound provides a quieter, more intimate experience.27 RealNZ also says Milford offers more activities, including scenic flights, cruises and kayaking.28 Visit Fiordland says both fiords offer overnight cruising and kayaking.6

Wildlife overlaps. RealNZ says fur seal sightings are reasonably common in both sounds, a pod of bottlenose dolphins lives in Doubtful Sound, dolphins are only occasional visitors in Milford Sound, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin can at times be seen in both.29 Southern Discoveries says Milford Sound is home to fur seals and bottlenose dolphins year-round, with the penguin visiting in the breeding season from August to November and the moulting season in March and April.30

The sights differ too. Milford has Mitre Peak, which RealNZ says rises 1692 m from the water, and falls that you can feel on the deck.31 Doubtful has the stop with the engines off, and the Department of Conservation calls it the Sound of Silence.32,33 If you want to photograph a famous mountain, choose Milford. If you want to listen to nothing, choose Doubtful.

Rain, winter and when each is best

Both fiords are wet. Visit Fiordland says Milford Sound receives around 6.5 to 7 metres of rain a year and has been known to receive up to 9 metres, which it calls the wettest inhabited place on the planet, and that Doubtful Sound receives around 6 metres.14,15 The difference is modest, so rain should not decide between them. Rain makes both fiords look better, because temporary waterfalls fill the cliffs.

Winter is the surprise in both. Visit Fiordland says winter, from June to August, is the most settled time of year in Milford Sound and in Doubtful Sound, with often blue and cloudless skies, and snow on the mountains.22,34 RealNZ says Milford Sound receives approximately seven metres of rain a year, which is what drives its waterfalls.35 The best-time page on this site goes month by month.

One practical difference is the road. Visit Fiordland says that in winter the Milford Road is closed when there is avalanche danger until the snow is cleared with explosives and heavy machinery, and that you must check the road status on the NZTA website.36,24 A Doubtful day trip starts at Manapouri, which avoids the Milford Road, but it still has the Wilmot Pass.

Before you book

A checklist for choosing

Decide first3

  • Pick your base: Queenstown, Te Anau or Manapouri6
  • Count your days: 12 hours for Milford, 13 for Doubtful from Queenstown
  • Compare the cancellation lines before you pay

Pack for either3

  • A good raincoat, since both fiords get 6 metres or more of rain15,14
  • A warm layer, even on a clear winter day22
  • Insect repellent for the sandflies23

Check the route3

  • Check the Milford Road status before you drive24
  • Ask about mobility for the Doubtful lake and pass25
  • Download what you need, since there is no Wi-Fi on Doubtful Sound26

Time and price: day and overnight

Put the listings side by side. Our Milford coach and cruise day from Queenstown is 12 hours from $156, the Doubtful Sound day from Queenstown is 13 hours from $282, and the Doubtful Sound day from Manapouri is 7 hours from $188. Doubtful Sound costs more because it needs more transport, not because the cruise is longer.

The overnight listings follow the same pattern. The Milford Sound overnight listing lasts 17.25 hours from $393, and the Doubtful Sound overnight listing lasts 23 hours from $440. If money is what settles the Milford or Doubtful Sound overnight cruise question, the gap between the two is small beside the cost of either night.

The records differ in size. Our Milford listing has 4,064 reviews at 4.7, while the Doubtful Sound day from Manapouri has 1,794 at 4.7 and the Queenstown version has 357 at 4.7. Ten recent reviews of the Manapouri day trip include two guests who preferred it to Milford Sound, which is one opinion, not a ranking.

So which one, or both?

Choose Milford Sound if it is your first time in Fiordland, you are short on time, you start in Queenstown without a car, or you want the famous peaks and waterfalls close enough to feel. Visit Fiordland calls it the only fiord reached by road, and RealNZ says it offers more activities.1,28

Choose Doubtful Sound if you want the quiet, the space and the lake-and-pass journey, and you are happy to spend more. Choose both if you have the days: Visit Fiordland says you can cruise or kayak overnight in either, and RealNZ says each fiord has its own appeal and that seeing both gives the full scope of the park.6,37 The short quiz at the top of this page matches your answers to a real listing.

Whichever you pick, book with a flexible cancellation line. The listings here allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before for the day trips, and up to 14 days before for the overnight ones. That leaves room to swap fiords if the forecast makes the choice for you.
