A day cruise shows you a fiord for a morning or an afternoon. A night aboard adds the evening, the dawn and the silence between. Here is what each choice gives you, asks of you and risks in Fiordland weather.

Main facts
A day cruise is a visit. You arrive, spend a couple of hours on the water and head home with the other passengers. On the Milford Sound Signature Cruise the operator says to allow up to 2hrs, with departures at 10.30am, 1pm and 3.25pm.4 An overnight cruise is closer to a stay. The Milford Sound overnight trip leaves the terminal daily at 4pm and comes back the following day at 9.15am.1
That long stretch changes what you see. The boat anchors in Harrison Cove, where guests can paddle a kayak, take a tender boat excursion or swim.6 An evening stargazing session on the outdoor deck runs from 9.30 to 10.00pm, and the next morning begins with a sunrise over the fiord and breakfast on board.7,8 Those are the hours a day cruise does not have, and they are the reason people choose to stay.
Timing is the other gain. DOC advises arriving in Milford Sound after 1.30 pm to avoid the crowds, and says traffic and parking are often busiest between 9.30 am and 1.30 pm.9,10 A boat that has already spent the night in the fiord sits outside that rhythm: you are there for the quiet evening and the early morning, whatever the car parks are doing in between.
Four trips side by side

Prices are from prices, not exact quotes, and each row is a different listing; lengths and cancellation windows are the listings' own.
Milford Sound day cruises are short. RealNZ lists its Classic Cruise at 1 hour 40 minutes, its Signature Cruise at 2 hours and its Premium and Business Class cruises at 2 hours.12 The day trip from Queenstown that this site sells is a 12 hour day, much of it spent on the coach. DOC puts the drive from Queenstown at about 4.5 hours one way without stops.13
The overnight cruise turns that travel time into something you spend on the water. The listing for the Milford Sound overnight cruise with water activities lasts 17 hours and allows free cancellation up to 14 days before. The boat sleeps 64 guests, in private cabins with ensuites or in limited quad share bunk-style compartments.14 Check in at the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal at least 30 minutes before departure.11
You still see the same fiord. Mitre Peak rises 1,692 m directly from the water, and the fiord stretches 16 kilometres to the open sea.15,16 The next morning the boat heads past St Anne's Point Lighthouse and, weather permitting, towards the Tasman Sea.17 What you gain is not a different view but a slower one, with the light changing over the same cliffs from late afternoon to breakfast.
Time on the trip
Durations are the listings' own: 7 hours, 12 hours, 17 hours and 23 hours.
Doubtful Sound is built around the journey in. The easiest way there is by boat from Pearl Harbour wharf in Manapouri across the lake to West Arm, then by coach over the Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove, and DOC says it needs to be booked in advance with a local operator.23,24 RealNZ times the lake crossing at 45 minutes and the coach over the pass at 45 minutes, and a day trip spends a large share of its hours in transit.25,26
A day trip does reach the fiord. The wilderness cruise includes a 2.5 hour cruise through the waterways, and the listing for the day trip from Manapouri lasts 7 hours in all.3 The overnight option keeps the fiord to yourself for longer. It leaves Pearl Harbour at 12.00pm and returns at 12.00pm the following day, and the listing runs 23 hours with free cancellation up to 14 days before.2
The fiord itself repays the extra hours. RealNZ describes Doubtful Sound as three times longer and ten times larger than Milford Sound, and DOC says it is known as the Sound of Silence.27,22 With no direct road access it is quieter and more remote than its famous neighbour.19 If you can choose only one fiord for a night, this is where the night changes the most.

Compare this optionOn the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise the vessels are the Fiordland Navigator or the Wanderer, traditional scow-style boats.18 The Navigator sleeps 52, in private cabins with ensuites in twin or double bed configuration.30 Other accommodation includes twin sleeping compartments with communal bathroom facilities, so check which type your booking includes before you pay.31
Meals are part of the trip. The Milford Sound overnight cruise serves canapes, a buffet dinner with dessert and a continental breakfast.32 Dietary requirements can be accommodated on RealNZ's overnight cruises if you note them when you book.29 Pack light: RealNZ recommends only one carry-on bag for the Milford Sound overnight trip.28
Expect to be offline. The overnight cruises have no phone signal, which RealNZ describes as part of feeling present in a remote place.21 Access is a real consideration too. The overnight vessels are not wheelchair accessible because they run over several floors with stairs, and the Doubtful Sound journey involves multiple transfers and floating wharves, so a reasonable level of mobility is required.20,33

Rain is the normal state of the fiords, not a problem. DOC says Piopiotahi Milford Sound is one of the wettest places in New Zealand, with up to 7 metres of rain each year, and that weather can change quickly.34 Southern Discoveries notes that boat trips are often more dramatic in the rain, when hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear, and that all its vessels have indoor seating.35
What does change an overnight plan is wind. The kayak and tender trips from the overnight boats are weather-dependent, and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult when kayaking from the Milford Mariner.5,36 DOC adds that the lakes and fiords of Fiordland are exposed and the wind usually strengthens in the afternoon, and that Lake Manapouri can quickly become rough and choppy, particularly in the afternoons.37,38
Build slack into the booking. The overnight listings allow free cancellation up to 14 days before, which is a longer window than the day trips offer. DOC also warns that cold, snow, strong winds and heavy rain can occur at any time of year in Fiordland, so a flexible date is worth more here than a perfect forecast.39

Doubtful Sound is a remote fiord known as 'the Sound of Silence'. It's home to one of the southernmost populations of bottlenose dolphins.
Before you book
Stay the night if time on the water is the point. Photographers, couples and anyone who wants the stargazing and sunrise sessions get the most from the longer trip, and the Doubtful Sound option feels more secluded than Milford. A night also suits travellers who like the idea of a boat that carries 20 kayaks and 2 tender craft and lets them paddle at the end of the day.40
Take a day cruise if your trip is short or your budget is tight. A day cruise from Queenstown is a long day by coach, but the fare starts from $156 on the listing this site sells, against $393 for the Milford Sound night. Guests who prefer a fixed schedule, who cannot manage stairs, or who want to keep a phone connection should look at the day options first.
Families can do either, with a limit. Kayaking from the Milford Mariner is available for guests aged 10 years and over, and the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise applies the same minimum age of 10 years.5,41 If you are still undecided, use the chooser above: it asks two questions and points you to a real listing, and you can compare all four options in the table and the calculator further down.
FAQ
RealNZ describes the lack of signal as part of feeling present in a remote environment.21
That is the window shown on the Milford and Doubtful overnight listings.
Southern Discoveries says every cruise goes the full length of the fiord, subject to weather, and visits Stirling Falls and Harrison Cove.43
