Sunset

Jan

  • Sun goes down about 21:33

RealNZ says January is the busiest month of the year, with 18 to 25°C.36

Sunset is worked out for the 15th of each month on New Zealand time, with summer time from late September to early April. Day length is for Milford Sound. Seasons come from DOC and the operators, because no weather station lies near the fiord.

The fiord is wet in every month, so the question is less about avoiding rain than about crowds, wind, road conditions and what the animals are doing. Here is how the hours and seasons differ.

Main facts

  • Time of dayMorning departures are generally quieter, and the water is often calmer before the afternoon wind picks up.1
  • Avoiding crowdsDOC advises arriving in Milford Sound after 1.30 pm to avoid the crowds.2
  • RainMilford Sound receives approximately 7 metres of rain annually, on around 182 days per year.3
  • WinterWinter means snow on Mitre Peak, penguin breeding and a harder road.4,5
  • No bad monthCruises run in most weather, and rain adds waterfalls.6,7

Time of day: morning, midday or late afternoon

The best time for a Milford Sound cruise depends on the hour and the season, and the sources agree on the shape of the day. RealNZ says morning departures are generally quieter and the water is often calmer before afternoon wind picks up.1 DOC adds that traffic and parking at Milford Sound are often busiest between 9.30 am and 1.30 pm, and that arriving after 1.30 pm avoids the crowds.8,2

Those two pieces of advice point at opposite ends of the day. Early cruises give calm water but arrive in the busiest stretch of the road. Late cruises give lighter traffic, but the afternoon wind is stronger. DOC notes that the lakes and fiords are exposed and that the wind usually strengthens in the afternoon.9 Pick the end of the day that matches what you mind most.

The Signature Cruise gives a sense of the choices: RealNZ lists daily departures at 10.30am, 1pm and 3.25pm, and says to allow up to 2hrs.10 The kayak operator notes that on fine summer days a strong day breeze develops mid to late morning, which is why some of its trips start early.11 If you want the fiord at its stillest, the overnight cruise gives you a sunrise as well.12

Seasons are as described by RealNZ and DOC; there is no climate chart because the nearest weather station is too far from the fiord to represent it.

Rain is part of the show

Milford Sound is one of the wettest places in New Zealand. DOC puts the rainfall at up to 7 metres each year and warns that weather can change quickly.19 RealNZ says rain falls on around 182 days per year.3 Southern Discoveries notes that up to 250 millimeters can fall in 24 hours during peak rains.20

That rain is why people come. Southern Discoveries says boat trips are often more dramatic in the rain, when hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear down the cliffs, and that all its vessels have indoor seating.7 The heavy rain also leaves a tea-coloured freshwater layer on the surface of the fiord, which is a feature of the place rather than a flaw in the day.21

Do not skip a booking because the forecast shows rain. Cruises run in most weather, according to RealNZ.6 What does change plans is wind and cloud: scenic flights are weather dependent, and RealNZ calls the weather in Milford Sound famously unpredictable.22,23 If you have a flexible date, choose the cruise on the day after a rainy spell, when waterfalls are still running hard and the cloud has often lifted.

Daytime temperatures by season

  • November18
  • Summer highs19

Winter and summer highs are Southern Discoveries' averages; the September and November figures are RealNZ's descriptions of spring.24,16

A Milford Sound cruise in winter

Winter is the season that makes travellers hesitate, and it is better than its reputation. RealNZ describes June to August as bringing snow on Mitre Peak, the Fiordland crested penguin breeding season and dramatic light on the water, and says waterfalls are at their most powerful in winter, fed by rainfall and snowmelt.4,29 Southern Discoveries gives winter highs as averaging around 9°C.24

The kayak operator makes a similar case for April to October: more settled weather, very calm water, fewer crowds and often no sandflies at all.30 DOC gives July to November as the best time to see tawaki, so a winter or spring cruise overlaps the breeding season.18 The boat itself is warm and covered, and the cruise is the easy part of a winter day.

The road is the hard part. DOC says winter conditions from May to September can be extremely challenging, that snow chains may be required, and that traffic volumes are lower so leaving from 9 am onwards is advisable.5,26,31 Avalanches usually occur from May to November, and DOC asks drivers not to stop on the section of road between the Hollyford Road junction and The Chasm.25,32 If you are unsure, take a coach.

Waterfalls are at their most theatrical after sustained rain and most powerful in winter.14,29

  • If I want to see penguins

    July to November

DOC names the breeding season from July to November as the best time.18

  • If I am nervous on icy roads

    Take a coach

DOC says winter conditions can be extremely challenging and suggests a coach if you are not confident.5

A Milford Sound cruise in summer

Summer brings the warmest weather and the longest days. RealNZ describes December to February as the time of dolphins and fur seals at their most active, and advises booking well ahead.13 Southern Discoveries gives summer highs as averaging 19°C, and RealNZ says January temperatures range from 18 to 25°C and that it is the busiest month of the year.24,36

DOC says the Milford journey is busiest in summer between October and April.8 That is the period to book early, choose a morning or late afternoon sailing and allow extra time on the road. Traffic signals at the Homer Tunnel can cause delays of up to 20 minutes, and DOC advises allowing one hour for parking and walking to the visitor terminal.37,28

Wind is the summer hazard on the water. DOC says Milford Sound is busy with boat traffic and that its southern side is more sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds and the afternoon day breeze common during summer.38 A day cruise covers this easily, since cruises run in most weather, but small-boat or kayak trips may be moved or cancelled when the breeze is strong.6,39

Autumn and spring, the shoulder seasons

The shoulder seasons suit travellers who want fewer people and strong waterfalls. RealNZ describes autumn, March to May, as bringing fewer crowds, cooler temperatures and waterfalls at their most theatrical after sustained rain.14 Southern Discoveries gives no autumn average, so check the forecast close to your date and pack for both sun and rain.

Spring brings the young animals. RealNZ describes September to November as the season of fur seal pups, penguin chicks on rocky shores and lupin blooms on the drive in, with temperatures lifting from around 10°C in September to 18°C by November.17,16 Baby dolphins appear from October, and fur seal pups from September.15

DOC says avalanches usually occur from May to November, which covers much of both seasons, so check conditions before you leave.25 DOC says to expect road closures and traffic delays because of weather, rock falls and, in winter, snow and avalanches, and recommends checking the road status before you set out.27 Roadside information signs at Te Anau, Knobs Flat and Milford Sound provide current road condition updates.40

What to wear and what to pack

Dress for wet and for change. Southern Discoveries advises a waterproof jacket, warm clothing and comfortable shoes, and DOC warns that Fiordland weather is highly changeable, with cold, snow, strong winds and heavy rain possible at any time of year.33,41 It can be sunny too, so add sun protection to the bag.

RealNZ's packing list is a useful baseline: non-slip shoes, a waterproof jacket, a warm fleece, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and insect repellent against sand flies.34 DOC also says sandflies are prominent in all areas, so repellent is a sensible addition.35 Add a waterproof cover for your camera if you plan to stand at the rail under a waterfall.

Finally, protect your plans. The listing this site sells allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which gives you room to move the day if the forecast turns. DOC's advice is to check the road status before you leave, and to carry extra food, water, warm clothes, sunscreen and insect repellent, since conditions can change quickly and mobile coverage is patchy.27,42
