Our guide and driver looked after us for the full 12 hours, took care on the winter roads and made sure everyone was accounted for. We spotted seals, and the crew offered to take our photos.

I was glad I had not driven myself. The guide made the long journey comfortable and the captain gave knowledgeable, detailed commentary on the cruise.

It rained, and that gave us a lot of waterfalls and some dolphins. The guide drove with care and the commentary was good all day.

Our guide was funny, kept us informed and entertained for the whole day, and drove the winding roads so that we felt safe.

A great day. The driver and guide was funny and informative, and his commentary got the day off to a good start.

The pacing was good the second time I did Milford. I had time to stop between the Eglinton Valley and the Mirror Lakes and take in the view.
the day
This is the Fiordland cruise we list: a coach and cruise day from Queenstown to Milford Sound that the listing gives as 12 hours, with pickup included and a live English guide. The pickup time and place are confirmed after booking, and they differ from the listed departure time, so the morning is not yours to guess.
The road does the first half of the work. Getting from Queenstown to the fiord takes about 5 to 6 hours with stops, and the coach runs via Te Anau and along the Milford Road. RealNZ puts the road at 288 km, so the stops are as much a relief as a sightseeing list.
Then the water. The cruise has 3 indoor and outdoor viewing decks and goes close to Stirling Falls, and tea service is free for the whole cruise, with snacks, cakes and drinks for sale at the on-board cafe and bar. After the cruise the coach turns round, and the day runs back the way it came.

the road
Visit Fiordland describes State Highway 94 as a 119 kilometre road from Te Anau to Milford Sound, with no shops or services along the way or at Milford Sound itself. That is why people take a coach: the road is long, the scenery is the point, and there is nowhere to buy lunch on the way.
The stops are worth the time. Visit Fiordland names the Eglinton Valley, the Mirror Lakes, the Chasm walking track and the Homer Tunnel, which is 1.3 kilometres long and was begun in 1935 and finished in 1953, or 1954 on the Department of Conservation's account. One guest on our listing found time to stop between the Eglinton Valley and the Mirror Lakes and called the pacing good.
There is no cellphone coverage along the Milford Highway, Visit Fiordland says, so the coach is also a rare chance to put the phone away. Bring a camera, a layer and some patience, and the long road will repay all three.

Doubtful Sound has no direct road, the Department of Conservation says, and Visit Fiordland says it spans 40 kilometres and is the deepest of New Zealand's 14 fiords. RealNZ says it is the second largest fiord in the park and three times longer than Milford Sound.
Getting there takes a lake and a pass. A boat crosses Lake Manapouri and a coach climbs the Wilmot Pass, and the Manapouri day trip lasts 7 hours from $188. From Queenstown the listing runs 13 hours from $282.
Our guide comparing Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound sets the two side by side on size, access, rain, wildlife and price. Visit Fiordland says you can cruise or kayak overnight in either, and both are day trips from Te Anau or Manapouri.

the rain
Visit Fiordland says Milford Sound receives around 6.5 to 7 metres of rain a year, and calls it the wettest inhabited place on the planet. RealNZ explains that the rain feeds temporary waterfalls which dry up entirely in fine weather. A wet day is therefore the day the cliffs look their best.
Southern Discoveries says boat trips are often more dramatic in the rain, when hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear, and that all its vessels have indoor seating. Our listing's cruise has 3 indoor and outdoor viewing decks, so you can choose between the spray and the dry.
One guest on our listing wrote that the rain made the trip more beautiful, with lots of waterfalls and dolphins. Visit Fiordland adds that winter, from June to August, is the most settled time of year in Milford Sound, with often blue and cloudless skies. Either way, a good raincoat is the one thing worth packing.

the water
Any Fiordland National Park cruise on Milford Sound follows the same plan. Southern Discoveries says every cruise goes the full length of the fiord, weather permitting, and passes Stirling Falls and Harrison Cove. The fiord is approximately 16 kilometres long, and its best-known peak, Mitre Peak, rises 1692 m straight from the water.
RealNZ describes the route in landmarks: Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls, Copper Point towards the Tasman Sea, Seal Rock, Anita Bay and Harrison Cove. Our listing's cruise goes close to Stirling Falls, so bring something waterproof for the deck.
Fur seals rest on Seal Rock, and RealNZ says they were hunted nearly to extinction in the 1800s and are now seen year-round. That is the cruise in one sentence: a long fiord, a lot of water falling and a few animals that are easy to miss.

the reviews
The listing has 4,064 reviews, and the ten newest English ones on file all give five stars. The praise is mostly about the people: funny, well-informed guides and drivers who made the winding road feel safe.
The reviews also describe what the day felt like. One guest saw seals and found the crew offering to take photos, another found the drive extremely long but was glad not to have driven it alone, and a third had time to stop along the Milford Road and arranged a scenic flight on the same day.
Read them as what they are: recent opinions from a long record, written by people who took the same coach and boat. Where a review mentions a tiring drive or a rainy day, it says so plainly, and that honesty is useful when you decide whether a 12-hour day suits you.
Secure it with free cancellingA peak, counted
RealNZ says Mitre Peak rises 1692 m straight from the water.
It is the first landmark on a Signature cruise, before Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls, and the reason the fiord looks taller from the deck than from the road.
the night
If a day is not enough, there are overnight cruises. RealNZ's Milford Sound overnight cruise leaves the terminal at 4pm and returns at 9.15am, and its Doubtful Sound overnight cruise leaves Manapouri at 12.00pm and returns at 12.00pm the next day.
The GetYourGuide listings start from $393 for the Milford night and $440 for the Doubtful night, with free cancellation up to 14 days before. RealNZ says its overnight cruises are child-friendly, have no phone signal on board and are not wheelchair accessible.
The overnight cruise pages on this site cover cabins, dinner, kayaking and what the morning looks like. For one long day, the coach and cruise is the plainer plan, from $156.

This is the Fiordland cruise we list: a 12-hour coach and cruise day from Queenstown to Milford Sound, with pickup included, a live English guide and a cruise that goes close to Stirling Falls. It is a long day on purpose, because the fiord sits at the end of a long road.

what to wear
Our listing advises layered clothing, sturdy shoes, a good raincoat, fly repellent, sun cream and a camera. That list covers a day that can be warm in the sun and cold on the deck, and wet whichever way you turn.
Southern Discoveries says there are sandflies at Milford Sound and advises insect repellent and long sleeves and trousers.
Bring a card for snacks and drinks, because they are sold on board, and tea is free. Leave anything breakable in the bag, and keep a plastic sleeve for the phone.

the wildlife
RealNZ lists bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, tawaki, the Fiordland crested penguin, and little blue penguins as present year-round in Milford Sound. Southern Discoveries says the fur seals and bottlenose dolphins stay year-round, and the Fiordland crested penguin visits in the breeding season from August to November and the moulting season in March and April.
None of it is guaranteed. Southern Discoveries says every cruise offers a chance to see wildlife but sightings cannot be guaranteed. Two guests on our listing mention seals and dolphins, which is good news and not a promise.
The wildlife page on this site covers where to look, and the comparison with Doubtful Sound explains why that fiord has its own pod of bottlenose dolphins.

Local time in Queenstown: --:--
before you go
Check the road if you are driving. Visit Fiordland says you must check the Milford Road status on the NZTA website, and that the road is closed in winter when there is avalanche danger. On a coach day that is the operator's job, but a closed road still changes the day.
Arrive early at the terminal. Southern Discoveries asks guests to arrive 20 minutes before departure, and Visit Fiordland says to allow 30 minutes to park and reach the terminal if you drove. Our listing's pickup time is confirmed after booking, so keep your phone number up to date.
Plan the evening after. A 12-hour day ends tired, so book dinner late and keep the next morning free.
Secure it with free cancellingwho it suits
Among Fiordland cruises in New Zealand, this day suits anyone based in Queenstown without a car who wants Milford Sound in one go. Visit Fiordland says coach and cruise operators run trips from Queenstown or Te Anau. You reserve now and pay later, and cancel free up to 24 hours before.
It does not suit anyone who dislikes long coach days. One guest called the drive extremely long, and the listing puts the trip to Milford at about 5 to 6 hours with stops. If that is too much, a flight one way or a night in Te Anau is the cure, and our fly-cruise-fly and Te Anau pages cover both.
Finally, do not treat the cruise as the whole trip. It is a short boat ride at the end of a long road, and the road is the other half of what you pay for.
