An overnight cruise lets you sleep aboard in Milford Sound once the day boats have gone. Here is the evening, the cabins, the kayaking, the morning sail and what the listing costs.

Main facts
A day cruise shows you Milford Sound at its busiest, with the boats lined up at the waterfalls. An overnight cruise shows you the same fiord once the crowd has gone. RealNZ says that after the day fleet departs, overnight guests have the fiord to themselves and no day visitors are permitted on board.7 The fiord is approximately 16 kilometres long, Southern Discoveries says, so a night at anchor changes the feel of the whole place.8
The vessel is the other half of the experience. RealNZ says the Milford Mariner is a purpose-built boat designed to replicate a traditional trading scow.9 The Milford Mariner overnight cruise is RealNZ's product here, and RealNZ says its Milford and Doubtful Sound overnight cruises are child-friendly and have no phone signal on board, so the evening is for talking, looking and eating.10 That is the whole product: time, quiet and a bed.
It is not a cheap extra, and it is not for everyone. The GetYourGuide listing starts from $393, far above a day cruise from $82, and it replaces a night in a hotel rather than adding to one. If your main goal is to see the waterfalls, a day boat does that. If you want the fiord to yourself and a sunrise, read on.

These details come from RealNZ's own pages for the Milford Mariner; the GetYourGuide listing gives the price from $393.2
The night starts in the afternoon. RealNZ's cruise is one night, leaving the Milford Sound terminal daily at 4pm, and guests check in at the Visitor Terminal at least 30 minutes before departure.1,11 Once aboard, the boat sails to its anchorage. RealNZ says the Milford Mariner anchors in Harrison Cove for the evening, with a kayak, a tender boat excursion or a swim on offer.4
Water activities depend on the weather and on age. RealNZ requires children to be at least 10 years old to kayak on this cruise.5 The listing says the same about the weather: water activities depend on it, and kayaking is optional at about 1 hour. Ask the crew how they decide on the day, and wear what you are happy to get wet in.
Dinner is the centre of the evening. RealNZ serves canapes, a buffet dinner with dessert and a continental breakfast the next morning.12 The listing mentions a buffet dinner and a continental breakfast prepared by an on-board chef. Dinner is also the moment to meet the nature guide and the other guests, in a fiord with no phone signal to pull you away.
Time on or near the water
The day trip includes the coach from Queenstown, so only part of it is on the water, and the overnight figure is the full listing from check-in to return.
After dinner comes the sky. RealNZ schedules a stargazing session from 9.30 to 10.00pm on the outdoor deck of the Milford Mariner, with blankets.13 Fiordland's walls hold the horizon close, so you see a slice of sky rather than the whole dome, but the lack of town light still makes it worthwhile. Cloud and rain can close the sky, and the schedule is a plan, not a promise.
Sleeping aboard comes in two forms. RealNZ houses guests in private ensuite cabins, in twin, double or single occupancy, and a single passenger must pay the sole occupancy rate.2 A limited number of quad-share bunk-style compartments with ensuites exist, and they are booked by phone.3 The cabins are simple, so spend your waking time on deck.
Pack light. RealNZ recommends no more than a carry-on sized bag per passenger on its overnight cruises because of limited space in the cabins.16 Bring warm clothes for the deck, a waterproof layer, swimwear if you plan to jump in, and a charger for the camera, because the pictures are the point. Leave anything you do not need in the car or at your hotel.

The longer fiord
Morning is the reward. RealNZ serves a cooked and continental breakfast aboard the Milford Mariner while the fiord comes to life.14 In early light a still fiord can hold the reflections of the peaks on the water, and a cooked breakfast is a good way to watch it.
The cruise then sails the fiord's length. RealNZ says the morning cruise passes St Anne's Point Lighthouse and, weather permitting, goes on towards the Tasman Sea.15 Southern Discoveries says every cruise goes the full length of the fiord, subject to weather, and this one does it in a quiet vessel with a smaller crowd.19 Look for fur seals and dolphins, which RealNZ lists as present year-round.20
The trip ends at the terminal at 9.15am.1 That leaves most of a day free, and a day cruise or a scenic flight would be separate bookings. If you start from Queenstown, plan the return drive carefully, because the road takes approximately 5 hours.21

The GetYourGuide listing is the booking route. It gives the cruise as 17.25 hours from the fiord terminal, with optional kayaking of about 1 hour and optional swimming, a buffet dinner and a continental breakfast. It starts from $393 with 58 reviews at 4.7, so the record is thin compared with the day cruises. Of the ten reviews on file, nine give five stars and one gives four, and guests praise the crew and the kayaking, though one found the morning rushed with an early disembarkation. The listing's 17.25 hours fits RealNZ's 4pm to 9.15am schedule.1
Cancellation is generous but dated. The listing offers free cancellation up to 14 days before for a full refund. RealNZ's own page says amendments may be made up to five days before travel and no refunds are given within 14 days of travel.22 Read the cancellation line of the exact booking before you pay, because this is not the 24-hour window of the day cruises.
Compare the price with our day trip. The coach and cruise day from Queenstown starts from $156 for 12 hours. The overnight cruise costs more than twice as much, but it includes a bed, dinner and breakfast, and it gives you the fiord at dawn. Judge it as a night out, not as a longer cruise.

Before you book
Reaching Milford Sound is the real work. Driving to the terminal takes 5 to 6 hours each way from Queenstown and 3 hours each way from Te Anau, according to the listing. Visit Fiordland says the road from Te Anau is 120 km and recommends allowing 3 hours, and that there are no shops or services along the way or at Milford Sound itself.23,18 RealNZ says overnight guests can take a coach from Queenstown or Te Anau, or self-drive with overnight parking.24
Check the road before you leave. Visit Fiordland says you must check the Milford Road status on the NZTA website before driving, and that in winter the road is closed when there is avalanche danger.17,25 If the road closes, a night booking is harder to move than a day booking, so ask your operator how it handles closures before you rely on the date.
Some guests should choose a day cruise instead. RealNZ says its overnight vessels are not wheelchair accessible because they have several floors joined by stairs.6 Anyone who dislikes small cabins, or who needs a phone signal for work, will also find the night long. For everyone else, the night is the nearest thing Milford Sound has to the whole fiord at rest.
A day cruise gives you between 1.5 and 2.5 hours on the water, RealNZ says, before the coach or the road takes you home.26 The overnight listing gives you 17.25 hours at the fiord. The price gap is the price of that extra time, and it only makes sense if you want the time itself, not just the waterfalls.
If you can spare only one day, our coach and cruise day from Queenstown is the simpler plan, from $156 for 12 hours. If you can spare two days and love quiet, the night is the better use of the fiord, and the best overnight cruise in Milford Sound for you is simply the one that fits your dates. Between the two sits a long drive either way, so decide where you sleep before you decide how long to float.
The overnight or day cruise page on this site sets the two side by side on cost per hour, weather risk and who should skip the night. The Doubtful Sound overnight page does the same for the longer fiord, and the page comparing Milford and Doubtful helps you pick the water before you pick the boat.
