Every Milford Sound cruise sails the same fiord, so the choice is the boat, the length, what is served and whether a coach brings you. Here is how the listings differ, with from prices.

The choice in five lines

  • Every cruiseAll Milford Sound cruises go the length of the fiord, weather permitting, and pass Stirling Falls and Harrison Cove.1
  • LengthOne operator lists its day cruises at 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and the listings here run from 105 minutes to 135 minutes.2
  • Our tourA 12-hour coach and cruise day from Queenstown, from $156, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
  • Cruise onlyCruise-only listings start from $82, but you must reach the terminal yourself.3
  • Small boatsA small boat listing runs 2 hours from $99 and a boutique small boat from $111.

What every Milford Sound cruise has in common

Before you compare boats, know what stays the same. Southern Discoveries says every cruise goes the full length of the fiord, subject to weather, and that each trip visits the major sights, including Stirling Falls and Harrison Cove.1 RealNZ describes its route in the same terms, from the terminal out toward the Tasman Sea and back, so a cheaper boat does not skip the scenery that a dearer one shows.4 What differs is how you see it.

The famous landmarks come in a fixed order. RealNZ names Mitre Peak, which it says rises 1692 m straight from the water, then Lady Bowen Falls, Stirling Falls, Copper Point, Seal Rock, Anita Bay and Harrison Cove.5,6 The fiord itself is approximately 16 kilometres long, according to Southern Discoveries, so a cruise covers all of it in a couple of hours.7 That is why every boat feels busy at the waterfalls and quiet in between.

Wildlife is a bonus on every boat, never a promise. Southern Discoveries says every cruise offers a chance to see wildlife but sightings cannot be guaranteed.8 RealNZ lists bottlenose dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, tawaki, the Fiordland crested penguin, and little blue penguins as present year-round.9 If animals matter most to you, the wildlife page on this site goes into when and where.

Big boats, small boats and what the difference buys

Size is the first split in any boat cruise in Milford Sound. RealNZ runs a Classic cruise on its largest vessels, with panoramic lounges and an international buffet to buy, and says it typically lasts 1 hour 40 minutes.11,12 Its Signature cruise uses the Milford Haven, which carries up to 180 guests, or the Milford Mariner, which carries up to 120.13 A bigger boat means more seats, more food choices and more people on the decks at the waterfalls.

Smaller boats trade seats for space. RealNZ caps its Premium cruise on the MV Sinbad at 45 guests and includes a five-course tasting menu.14 Southern Discoveries sells a Captain's VIP Lounge upgrade for its Nature Cruise, limited to 20 guests per departure, with a private room and an exclusive outdoor deck.15 On GetYourGuide, a 2-hour small-boat listing describes itself as run by the smallest cruise operator in Milford Sound, and no food is sold on board.

None of this changes the fiord, only your seat in it. A small boat can nose closer to a waterfall and turn quickly, while a large boat gives you a warm lounge, a bar and a place to sit when the rain comes sideways. Southern Discoveries notes that all its vessels have indoor seating and that cruises are often more dramatic in the rain, when hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear.16 Pick the boat for your group, not for the postcard.

Time on the water

How long each cruise keeps you out

  • Classic cruise1 hour 40 minutes
  • Catamaran nature105 minutes
  • Signature2 hours
  • Small boat2 hours
  • Longest cruise135 minutes

The Classic and Signature lengths are RealNZ's typical figures and the others come from the listings; add the coach time if you start from Queenstown.12

Nature cruise, scenic cruise and the longer sailings

Names such as nature cruise and scenic cruise describe the commentary more than the water. A Milford Sound nature cruise on a modern catamaran lasts 105 minutes, has spacious outdoor viewing decks and sells meals and drinks on board. Another nature listing runs 1.5 to 2 hours on a purpose-built catamaran with 360 degree views from the top deck, and lets you add a buffet or picnic lunch at booking. Both start from $97.

A longer sailing gives the commentary more room. One listing describes the operator's longest cruise on the fiord at 135 minutes, from $117. It has 33 reviews at 4.6, so it is a newer product than the 3,033 reviews behind the 2-hour small boat. A cheaper 105-minute waterfalls, wildlife and rainforest listing starts from $82, with 108 reviews.

A signature sailing sits between them. A listing for signature cruises lasts 2 hours, uses vessels with indoor and outdoor seating, and has a licensed bar with barista coffee, local beer and cabinet food. It starts from $99 with 580 reviews at 4.6. For a first visit, the gap between 105 and 135 minutes matters less than the weather on the day.

Match the cruise to your group

Start with what you cannot change: how you reach Milford, how much space you want and how the group handles weather.

The Classic cruise sells an international buffet, and Signature has a licensed bar with barista coffee.11

  • If I need wheelchair access

The small-boat and catamaran listings are marked wheelchair accessible.

  • If I am driving myself

The coach and cruise day we link to

Most visitors from Queenstown do not choose a boat at all, because the cruise comes bundled with the road. Our listing is a 12-hour day with pickup included, a live English guide and a coach that runs via Te Anau to Milford Sound. The listing puts the trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound at about 5 to 6 hours with stops.

On the water, the listing promises a cruise with 3 indoor and outdoor viewing decks that goes close to Stirling Falls, plus complimentary tea service for the whole cruise. Snacks, cakes and drinks are for sale at the on-board cafe and bar. You reserve now and pay later, and free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before for a full refund.

The record behind it is the longest on this page: 4,064 reviews at 4.7. The ten newest English reviews on file all give five stars and praise funny, well-informed guides and safe driving on the winding road; one guest saw seals and another was glad not to have driven the long road alone. The listing leaves the pickup time to a confirmation after booking, which differs from the listed departure time.

The route in order

What a Signature cruise passes, one landmark at a time

  1. The start

    Mitre Peak first

RealNZ says its Signature cruise opens with the most famous view, Mitre Peak, which rises 1692 m from the water.5

  2. The falls

    Lady Bowen and Stirling

The cruise passes Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls, and the deck takes some of the spray.6

  3. Toward the sea

    Copper Point

It slips past Copper Point toward the Tasman Sea, weather permitting.6

  4. The seals

    Seal Rock

Seal Rock is a resting place for fur seals, which were nearly hunted out in the 1800s and are now seen year-round.10

  5. The bay

    Anita Bay

The route passes Anita Bay, which RealNZ says is treasured for its pounamu.6

  6. The cove

    Harrison Cove

It finishes at Harrison Cove, where Mt Pembroke and the end of the Milford Track come into view.6

Cruise only or coach and cruise: the real price gap

A cruise-only listing looks cheap until you add the road. The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound takes approximately 5 hours, Southern Discoveries says, and Visit Fiordland puts Queenstown to Te Anau at 170 km and Te Anau to Milford Sound at 120 km.3,21 If you do not have a car, a cruise-only fare solves nothing.

Coach and cruise listings from Queenstown start from $135 for a glass-roof coach day of 12.5 hours and run to $221 for a small group of at most 15 guests. Ours sits in the middle from $156, with 12 hours. The two other big Queenstown day listings are from $172 at 12 hours and from $182 at 12.5 hours.

There is no single best Milford Sound cruise, only the best fit for your group. A day package is not a cruise upgrade; it is a transport bill with a boat attached. If you will self-drive from Te Anau, Visit Fiordland recommends allowing at least 4 hours for the drive if you want to stop at viewpoints.17 Add the cruise check-in 20 minutes before departure, and a late arrival can usually be put on a later cruise.22,23 The overnight and fly-cruise-fly pages cover the other ways to arrive.

Before you book

A checklist for choosing and packing

Decide first3

  • Decide whether you need a coach: Queenstown to Milford is about 5 hours by road3
  • Check the group size on the listing, since the Premium cruise caps at 4514
  • Read the cancellation line before you pay

Pack for the wet3

  • A good raincoat and sturdy shoes, as our listing advises
  • Sun cream and fly repellent for the other days
  • Insect repellent and long sleeves for sandflies18

At the terminal3

  • Arrive 20 minutes before departure19
  • Ask ahead about wheelchair access20
  • Bring your own food if your boat sells none

Rain, check-in and small things that decide the day

Rain is the rule here, not the exception. Visit Fiordland says Milford Sound gets around 6.5 to 7 metres of rain a year, and RealNZ explains that this feeds temporary waterfalls which dry up in fine weather.24,25 A cruise in wet weather is therefore often the showier one. Pack a good raincoat, as our listing advises, and an indoor seat becomes a comfort, not a consolation.

Arrive early. Southern Discoveries asks guests to arrive 20 minutes before departure at the Milford Sound Terminal, and RealNZ asks for at least 20 minutes for its Signature cruise too.19,26 Visit Fiordland adds that you should allow 30 minutes to park and reach the cruise terminal if you drove.22 Sandflies are present, so Southern Discoveries advises insect repellent, long sleeves and trousers.18

Think about access and food in advance. Two Southern Discoveries vessels, the Pride of Milford and the Spirit of Milford, have wheelchair access by ramp.20 A small-boat listing sells no food, so bring your own, while a nature listing sells meals and drinks on board. Cancellation windows differ too: RealNZ gives its Signature cruise a 24-hour policy, and our listing offers 24 hours.27
